What it is

A room that counts as a bedroom

A bedroom downstairs needs more than a bed. It needs a way out, a ceiling you can stand under, alarms and heat.

We frame the walls, insulate them, hang and finish drywall, lay a floor, hang a door and build a closet. The electrician and plumber who work on your house are licensed in their trades and their work is inspected.

  • Egress window and well

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

  • Heat that reaches the room

Permits and rules

What the inspector checks in a bedroom

The inspector looks at the way out, the ceiling height, the alarms and the electrical work. A bedroom needs smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and the egress window has to meet its sizes.

A permit covers the whole conversion. We file it, and we book the rough-in and final inspections.

Questions about this job

Can I use the room as a bedroom without a permit?

You can sleep in it, but a room without a permit and a way out may not count when you sell the house, and it may not be safe. We build to the permit.

What if my ceiling is low?

Most of the room needs 7 feet finished. A lower ceiling may suit a den or storage instead, and we say which.

Do you handle the wiring?

A licensed electrician does it and it is inspected. It's on the quote as its own line.

How long does it take?

A single bedroom is usually a few weeks, depending on the inspections.
